Constipation in Children

Constipation in infants and children is a common problem for parents. Mostly children at 1-5 years old suffer from it. Constipation refers to bowel movements that are infrequent or hard to pass and is a common cause of painful defecation. There are many causes of constipation.

Causes of Constipation in Children                                       

Children’s resisting to have painful defecation is probably main cause. If they feel pain, they resist. So, this may become chronic. Some children may feel uncomfortable while doing poo on early days of toilet training. Thus, they may resist to go to toilet, babies also become constipated when they start solids. Changes in diet, low-fibre foods and managing new foods are other causes of constipation.

Medication side effects and cow milk allergy may also trigger constipation. Sometimes, changing circumstances, being under stress are other causes.

How to Treat

If toilet training triggers constipation, you may delay it for a while. For toilet training, you may take them to toilet especially breakfast. Changes in formula, fruits or juices which cause less constipating may help you.

If constipation goes on even you pay attention what to do, you may see doctor. Besides, overusing suppository may cause undesirable situation like not defecating without it. Thus, parents should be careful. They should see doctor or use medicine after getting all precaution. Sometimes, parents complain of wriggling babies. However, this help bowel movements. So, you should let constipated baby exercise or play more.

Well- balanced diet can help to toilet training. Children may have breakfast earlier. However, you must see doctor if you can’t prevent constipation.
